Sound doesn’t stop when it ends. It keeps travelling outward long after the source has gone quiet, and that is what this painting is about — the dark centre is where the sound came from, and everything spiralling out from it is what’s left.
The mauve and white were pulled around in long sweeping arcs while the paint was still wet, so the movement is genuinely in the surface rather than drawn on top of it. Gold is flecked through the curve and into the dark, and the drips were left to run down the canvas on their own without being tidied up.
As the largest of these six pieces, it’s built to hold a wall by itself.
